Alcoholism. Satirical drawing by George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Medusa is depicted with a skeletal head, holding aloft a goblet of wine and cheering the gathered crowd. Behind her stands a devil who joins in the cheering. Cruikshank, a British illustrator, began campaigning against alcohol in the 1930s. In 1847, he renounced alcohol and became an enthusiastic supporter of the Temperance Movement in the UK.
